Socio-Economic Development
Socio-Economic Development refers to contributions made by businesses to initiatives that improve access to the economy for previously disadvantaged communities. Under the B-BBEE Codes of Good Practice, companies earn points by supporting approved socio-economic initiatives that benefit at least 75% Black South African beneficiaries. These contributions typically support education, skills development, community upliftment, and poverty alleviation programmes through donations, funding, or resources provided to qualifying organisations such as Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs).

Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) is a South African government policy that measures how businesses contribute to economic transformation. Your B-BBEE level directly affects your ability to win government contracts, tender for corporate business, and access certain forms of financing. A higher B-BBEE level can be a significant competitive advantage.
An Exempted Micro Enterprise (EME) has an annual turnover of R10 million or less. A Qualifying Small Enterprise (QSE) has a turnover between R10 million and R50 million. A Generic entity has a turnover above R50 million. Each category is measured differently under the B-BBEE Codes of Good Practice, with EMEs and QSEs having simplified requirements.
EMEs and QSEs with 51% or more black ownership can use a sworn affidavit instead of a formal SANAS verification certificate. However, many large corporates and government entities prefer or require a formal verification certificate. We advise clients on the most appropriate option based on their business environment and client requirements.
The timeline depends on the size and complexity of the organisation and how prepared the documentation is. The verification process itself typically takes 2 to 6 weeks to issue the certificate.

Yes. Skills Development is one of the most impactful elements of the B-BBEE scorecard. We assist organisations with structuring learnership programmes, bursaries, and workplace training initiatives that comply with SETA requirements and maximise B-BBEE scoring points.
B-BBEE certificates are valid for 12 months from the date of issue. We recommend beginning the renewal preparation process at least 3 months before expiry to ensure continuity and avoid a lapse in your B-BBEE status, which could affect your ability to tender.
